Food has the power to heal, nourish, and bring people together. The Indian food industry has undergone significant transformations over the past decade, driven by a confluence of factors such as economic growth, urbanization, changing consumer preferences, and technological advancements. There has been a rise in organized retail leading to the availability of a wider range of products and better shopping experiences. Approximately 70 per cent of food service consumption as of 2023 is concentrated in the top 50 cities and among upper-middle and high-income segments, which are expected to remain demand hotspots in the medium term.
Additionally, the rise of online food delivery platforms has revolutionized how people consume food, providing convenience and accessibility. The online food delivery segment has grown from 8 per cent in 2019 to 12 per cent in 2023, representing a 2.8 times growth in online food delivery compared to overall food services.
Also, consumers are becoming more health-conscious, leading to a surge in demand for organic, natural, and healthy food products. To add to the evolution in the food space, international food trends and cuisines have made their way into India, influencing consumer preferences and driving innovation. Amidst these evolutions is the much-needed dash of Technological Advancements, with Food technology playing a crucial role in improving food safety, extending shelf life, and enhancing food production efficiency.
Moving forward, while sustainability, innovation and personalization are here to stay, innovative transformations and collaborative solutions are going to add a new dimension to the future course of action for the food segment in the country.
